How to Configure Force and Normal App Updates

Learn how to notify users of app updates and configure Normal or Force Updates for your customer and driver apps.

When a new version of the app is released, you can control whether users are forced to update to the latest version or can continue using their current version. In this guide, we'll show how you can configure this for both customer and driver apps.

What’s the Difference Between Normal and Force Update?

The main difference is whether updating is optional or mandatory. The update type determines what users see when they open the app after a new version becomes available on Google Play and the App Store.

Normal Update

In a normal update, users can continue using the current version of the app without updating. They'll see an update prompt but can skip it and install the new version whenever they choose.

Force Update

Users must install the new version before they can continue using the app. A mandatory update prompt is displayed, and users cannot access the app until the update is completed.

How to Configure the Update Type

To set up the update configs, navigate to the path below:

Admin Center → Settings → Customization → Apps

The update settings for all apps are managed here and can be configured separately for iOS and Android.

For each app and device type, there are a few settings that can be configured:

Activation status:

This setting determines whether the app is available to users or in maintenance mode. When set to Active, users can access and use the app normally. When set to Inactive, the app is unavailable, and users will see a maintenance message instead.

⚠️ Important: Do not change the Activation status unless you intend to make the app unavailable to users.

Current app version

This field shows the current app version and specifies the latest version number for force/normal updates. You need to enter the last number of the version here. For example, if the app version is 2.102.2.15, enter 15 as the current app version.

Below this field, you can see the version number that was last configured for a Normal Update or Force Update.

The latest app version can be found in the About Us menu in the profile after updating the app from the markets.

Update type

This setting determines how the update is presented to users. Select Normal update to make the update optional, or Force update to require users to update before continuing to use the app.

New update URL

This setting specifies the URL where users will be redirected to update the app. Use the app's Google Play Store link for Android apps and the Apple App Store link for iOS apps.

You can find the URL by opening your app's page on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, copying the link, and pasting it into this field.

The update URL is fixed, and after setting it once, there is no need to change it for the next updates.

After setting everything, make sure to click the Save Changes button.
